Style Louis XIII

Furniture legs are shaped by turning (tournage), a technique imported from Holland.
 
 
Armrests are decorated with figures, often elegant women in contemporary costume.

Chairs with high backs are now upholstered.
A new type of furniture appears: le bureau with one or two drawers and leg room. The furniture gave its name to the room.
 
 
The pieces connecting and stabilizing the legs (l'entretoise) are elaborately turned and H- or X- shaped.
